Folios 246-247: George Countess, HMS Ethalion, Spithead. When he was cruising in the North Sea in HMS Pegasus off Bergen under the command of Admiral Henry Harvey, scurvy broke among the crew. Admiral Lord Howe had ordered that Pursers should supply wine for the use of the sick, and when he gave directions to his Purser to do this, all the symptoms of scurvy disappeared. He reported this to the Sick and Hurt Board. When scurvy again appeared in his crew on the recent passage from Oporto, the Surgeon reported that lime juice alone was not effective, and so he gave directions to the Purser to supply the Surgeon with as much wine as necessary, and once again the scurvy disappeared. The Victualling Office has refused to allow the Purser for the expense of issuing this wine, saying they need an order from the Admiralty. Asks that this be issued.
Folio 247: Cover for Folio 246.
