Description (What the record is about)

Folios 209-210: Edward Cooke, HMS Sybille, Macao. Reports his arrival on November 13, 1798, with HMS Fox, HMS Trident and a convoy of East Indiamen. His orders are to collect any East India Company ships and return by the Malacca Straits to rejoin Rear Admiral Peter Rainier at Trincomalee. He left Pala Penang on December 8 and Malacca on the 18th, and shortly after coming through the Straits of Maccassar, met up with the Cirencester, Hope and Coutts off the [Pellas ?] Islands. Reports the loss of HMS Providence and says Captain William Robert Broughton and part of his crew are at Macao, rest were put aboard HMS Swift which sailed with a convoy in June, 1797, and has not been heard of since.
