Folios 163-164: William Collis, HMS Dromedary, Deptford. Further to his letter 31st May requesting John Stretton, formerly HMS Dromedary’s Boatswains Mate receives his pay for his service onboard HMS Adamant. Says the reason he disserted HMS Dromedary, left ashore at Woolwich August 1795 was because he was fearful of the ship’s crew who said he was too strict. He immediately joined HMS Adamant until being cast away in a prize of hers between Dieppe and Boulogne where he was taken prisoner of war until he effected his escape in a fishing boat landing at Dover. There he gave himself up immediately to the Regulating Officer. The Dromedary’s First Lieutenant gives him the best of characters, assuring him he would never have left the ship except because he was fearful of meeting with resentment and ill treatment: Deserves a pardon.
