Folios 258-259: Thomas Wittewronge Whitewell Clayton, HMS Prince William, Leith Roads. Following orders from Vice Admiral Skeffington Lutwidge, he sailed with a convoy from the Nore on 2 July 1797 for this place. On the 3 July the Alicia and Mary sloop, laden with ordnance signalled distress, she had sprung a leak and was sinking. It was blowing a gale but they managed to save the crew, the ship sank in 10 fathoms of water. The William and Jane parted company owing to heavy squalls, he imagines she made for the Humber. He arrived safely with the other two vessels and will now sail for Hull, as ordered by Admiral Adam Duncan.
