Description

Folios 487-488: Edmund Crawley, HMS Lion, Portsmouth. Sends a petition from Mr Samuel McKnight, Midshipman on HMS Lion, who has passed his certificate qualifying as a Gunner on a third rate ship. Recommends him as highly deserving of promotion, with long service.

Folios 489-490: enclosure with folios 487-488: petition from Samuel McKnight, Midshipman, HMS Lion. He has served for 17 years, during which he has served as Acting Gunner, Midshipman, and Master's Mate. He obtained a certificate from the Gunners at Plymouth on 22 April 1782, qualifying him for the position of Gunner, and encloses a copy. He also has various certificates showing he has served as Midshipman and Master's Mate on several vessels.
