Description

Folios 447-448: George Contess, HMS Daedalus, Princes Island Harbour. Reports that he sailed from Madeira with HMS Martin and the convoy on 30 January, and arrived with them at Cape Coast on 1 March. HMS Martin was then dispatched along the coast as ordered, to inform the trade of the forthcoming sailing from Princes Island with a convoy for the West Indies. They left Cape Coast on 1 April and proceeded for Princes Island along the coast as far as Whydah [Ouidah, Benin], picking up and taking trade vessels as they went. They arrived at Pronces Island on 17 April, re-joining HMS Martin , which had not been able to proceed any lower than Whydah because of lack of pilots. Captain Sutton had been informed that there were no ships either at Old Calabar or the Rives Camerones, and the Governor of Whydah promised if possible to send a message to Bonney about the proposed sailing, should there be any vessels there. They proposed leaving Princes Island on 25 April with 4 ships under convoy. HMS Martin has orders to proceed to Spithead, and he is therefore sending with it a report on the state and condition of HMS Daedalus, and a list of the convoy.
