Folios 411-412: James Cotes, 6 Stone Buildings, Lincolns Inn, London. Responds to a request dated 10 December for a statement regarding the circumstances set out in the petition by Phillip Le Rey (Ray). Asserts that it is all untrue, except that he came on board and conducted the ship into Saint Helens Road, for which services Captain Cotes gave him a certificate. The details of the accident have been fully set out in his letters, dated he believes October 1792, as well as by the trial, at a Court Martial of the Pilot John Parkinson presided over by Sir Andrew Hammond. Records of the expenses and claims resulting from the accident which were paid are held by the Navy Board. If necessary, evidence other than his own can be obtained from statements from some of the Officers, who will confirm that the claims made by Phillip Le Ray are untrue and scandalous.
