Description

Folios 277-278: James Colnett. Encloses two letters from the magistrates of [Kings] Lynn and Boston. Will waste no time in arranging his reports of the defences and resources within reach of the coast, for which he has been employed.

Folios 279-280: enclosure with folios 277-278. Letter to Captain Colnett, signed by 15 named merchants of the Borough of Boston, Lincolnshire, 12 September 1796. The writers express their concern at the unprotected and defenceless state of the port and its trade. In the spring of 1795 they reported that their principal trade was the carriage of corn from Lincolnshire to London, and expressing concern at their lack of protection. Propose a gunship for protection.

Folios 281-282: enclosure with folios 277-278. Letter to Captain Colnett from Robert Truman, deputy Mayor of Kings Lynn, 12 September 1796. At a meeting of the inhabitants, the proposal of Captain Colnett and Captain Wolley for a gun boat to protect the town was approved. They propose one gun boat to convey trade from Lynn Roads to Spurn Point or North Yarmouth, and one to remain at the town, to be manned by volunteers from the town. They believe that there would be sufficient volunteers, provided that they received compensation.
