Description

Folios 271-272: James Colnett, [Kings] Lynn. Encloses his report of the coast from Cromer to the south entrance of [Kings] Lynn. Captain Wolley [Regulating Captain, Lynn], has delivered a copy of his letter of 15 August 1796, and of his report dated 30 August. Mr Thelwall arrived last night.

Folio 272A: Hand drawn chart of the coast from Cromer to Hunston Lights and the channel to Lynn, covering sandbanks and soundings off shore, and noting batteries and possible sites for signal stations.

Folio 273-276: enclosure with folios 271-272. James Colnett. Detailed description of the coast from Cromer to Saint Edmond's, the south point of the entrance to Lynn Deeps. Describes possible landing sites, anchorages, road communications with the interior. Notes that Sathouse bay is used by smugglers who can reach Norwich in 4 hours, but there is an encampment of the Horse Artillery commanded by Major Judson, with 170 men and 250 horses. Gives recommendations for defence of Blakeney and Wells harbours, and sites for signal stations. The John and Mary tender, commanded by Lieutenant Chambers, is stationed at Wells until further notice. Makes recommendations for signal stations and defence of Brancaster harbour. Comments on numbers of men and vessels in the area and the possible site of a rendezvous.
