Description

Folios 247-248: James Colnett, Southwold. Encloses a report of his progress along the coast of Suffolk. Has received the letter sent to him at Orford. Intends to reach Yarmouth this evening and will send his next report from there.

Folio 249: enclosure with folios 247-248. James Colnett. Chart number 4. Hand drawn chart of the coastline from the entrance to Harwich to Southwold, noting sites of batteries and proposed signal stations.

Folio 250: enclosure with folios 247-248. James Colnett. Chart number 4. Hand drawn chart covering the same area as folio 249, but covering sandbanks and soundings off shore.

Folio 251-254: enclosure with folios 247-248. James Colnett, Southwold, 29 August 1796. Detailed description of the coast of Suffolk from Harwich Harbour to Southwold, noting possible anchorages, landing sites, sites for signal stations and gun boats, batteries and road communications inland. Makes recommendations for the protection of the area.
