Folio 238-239: James Colnett, Harwich. Encloses his report for the coast from St. Osyth to Harwich, finishing the coast of Essex. Has received the letter sent to St. Osyth. Will now proceed along the coast of Suffolk to Southwold and will forward his next report from there.
Folio 240: enclosure with folios 238-239. James Colnett. Chart number 3. Hand drawn chart of the coast from the entrance of the River Colne at St Osyth point to the mouth of the River Orwell and Langar [Languard] Fort, with locations of batteries and proposed signal stations.
Folio 241-243: enclosure with folios 238-239. James Colnett, Harwich, 22 August 1796. Detailed description of the area covered by Chart number 3, noting possible sites for landing, signal stations, sites of batteries which have begun or are planned, and road communications with the interior. Makes recommendations for protection against an enemy invasion at Gunfleet Sands and at Harwich. There are many seamen at Harwich, and Lieutenant Silver [Regulating Officer, Harwich] has informed him that they are 3-year apprentices.
