Folios 367-368: James Colnett, No 17 Clements Inn. Since I saw you this morning I have received a letter from Captain Hay of the Royal Engineers dated Malden in which he says"I am fearful the vessel will not be ready as soon as we could wish in the meantime I think you might obtain a good deal of satisfactory information from the Pilot of this neighbourhood" having seen Sir Andrew Snape Hammond [Hamond] and mentioned to him the compliment of people necessary for navigating the service: purpose setting out for Malden this evening to obtain whatever information the"Pilots of that neighbourhood" may be enabled to afford me. Request that Mr Willson who was chief mate on my last voyage now master of HMS Firm Gun Vessel [Floating Battery] at Sheerness might be lent to me to bring the vessel round and procure a crew. I would like to have Sir Samuel Marshall's nephew who is now a Midshipman onboard a ship st Spithead join me, he was also on my last voyage.
