Description

Folios: 308-309: James Colnett, HMS Glatton, Downs. Reply to letter dated 27 September 1803 which enclosed a letter from Mr Sullivan with the papers from Governor King and requesting his report on the case. [Claim by the Governor that convicts went missing]. HMS Glatton left Sydney on 18 May 1803 with the last disembarkation of convicts on the 11 May 1803, yet no search was made for any missing convicts. Though by the date of Mr Sullivans letter (16 May 1802), he must of known of their pretended escape two days prior to HMS Glatton sailing. Receipts:- Male Convicts 259, Female Convicts 126, Total 385. Died on the passage:- Men - 8, Woman - 5, Total 13. One man missing at Rio (Innis Lewis), One man (Peter Thompson) seen on shore after being disembarked on 11 May 1803. One Woman (Mary Hicks) Discharged on 31 August 1802 to the jail of Bury St Edmunds by Lord Pelhams order. Total 401. No such woman as Judith Cottle, named in Governor Kings letter to be missing, went out in HMS Glatton. It is a man name of Jediah Cottle who was discharged 15 March 1802 at Sydney and sent to Paramatta [Parramatta] and included in the above figure of 259.

List of convicts that died on the Passage [with dates] Males:- William Woodford 29 Oct 1802, John Thorn 24 Dec 1802, William Grant or Vaux 16 Jan 1803, John Pitt or Quarley? 1 Feb 1803, John Williams 3 Feb 1803, William Rees 5 Feb 1803, William Lyon 9 Feb 1803 and Thomas Littlejohn 14 Feb 1803. Females:- Lucy Jones 14 Oct 1802, Mary Sedgwick 29 Oct 1802, Sarah Wilkes 2 Dec 1802, Frances Brough 19 Jan 1803 and Sarah Makin 31 Jan 1803.
