Description

Folio 521: George Cockburn, HMS Phaeton, off Le Havre. Has been asked to report on the eight men listed. Aside from Henry Gateshell, all of them are Able Seamen who were sent out to his ship from HMS Zealand at the Nore. If they were to be discharged, it would weaken his crew, particularly since he has received orders today to discharge three others.

Henry Gateskill was Carpenter of the Argo of Seaton Sluice when he was impressed, and is now aboard HMS Phaeton. Encloses affidavits from the owner and the Master of the vessel, plus Gaketskill's indenture of apprentice as a Shipwright [no longer present], asks for his discharge.

Folio 520: Enclosed with Folio 521: [Blank, except for a series of endorsement relating to several individuals who should be discharged.]

Folio 523: Enclosed with Folio 519: Affidavit by Thomas Reay, Master of the Argo of Hartley, sworn at Shadwell on August 16, 1803, concerning the circumstances of the impressment of Henry Gateshill, Carpenter of the ship, in Long Reach by officers from HMS Phaeton on August 12.
