Description

Folios 510-511: George Cockburn, HMS Phaeton, the Nore. Acknowledges the letter about Robert Brown, said to the harpooner of the Magnificence. Brown is on board his ship, as Thomas Jackson's letter states, because he did not feel that his protection was valid while the Magnificence was lying idle. He also lent the collier from whom Brown was taken, two men to carry her up the River [Thames] but they have not yet been returned.

Folio 512: enclosed with folios 510-511. Letter dated 17 August 1803 by R A Harrison, Collector of Customs, Hull. Certifies that Robert Brown has posted the necessary bond to sail as a harpooner to Greenland aboard the Magnificence.

Folio 513: enclosed with folios 510-511. Letter dated 17 August 1803 from Thomas Jackson, part owner of the Magnificence whaling ship, to the Admiralty. Is sending the enclosed certificate because he understands Robert Brown has been impressed from aboard the Jessy collier, Thomas Dennison, Master, in Long Reach and is now aboard HMS Phaeton. Brown was working in the coastal trade under his protection when he was impressed. If the protections are not honoured, it will be impossible for him to get harpooners for his whaling ships. Asks for Brown to be discharged. He has already written to Captain George Cockburn with this request but has received no reply, either because the letter dis not reach him, or because he was not willing to discharge the man without an order from the Admiralty. PS. He would have sent Mr Thornton or Mr Staniforth, their members of Parliament, to call on the Admiralty, but because Parliament has been prorogued, he does not think they are in London.
