Description

Folios 478-479: Alexander Inglis Cochrane, HMS Northumberland, Bear Haven. Encloses a letter from Lieutenant William Stewart , who is on his way to join the ship together with Joseph Pardee, whose brother is currently a Quartermaster aboard HMS Northumberland. Pardee comes from Queensferry, part of the borough he represents in Parliament, and he requested [Regulating] Captain James Nash to enable the two men to join his ship. Asks for an order for the two men to be sent from the Nore.

Folios 480-481: enclosed with folios 478-479. Letter dated 15 November 1803 from Lieutenant William Stewart, aboard HMS Scourge, Yarmouth Roads, to an unknown correspondent. He is on his way to join HMS Northumberland, having left HMS Gorgon in Leith Roads and been put aboard HMS Scourge to be transferred to the guard ship HMS Zealand at the Nore. Asks that Captain Alexander Cochrane be notified that he is on his way, so that he can arrange onward transport from the Nore. He is bringing a chest and two parcels that he received from Mr Steel. PS With him is Joseph Purdie from Queensferry who volunteered with Captain James Nash at Leith to serve on HMS Northumberland. His brother James is already serving in that ship.
