Description

Folios 446-447: Alexander Inglis Cochrane, HMS Northumberland, Plymouth Dock. Acknowledges the letter saying that the men raised by Lieutenant Hodge at Edinburgh cannot be sent to him because they came from within the limits of the Leith rendezvous. Reports to the Admiralty that most of the men raised in Edinburgh were raised by his friends and sent to Lieutenant Hodge, who paid them their expenses and the Edinburgh bounty. Since his home is in Edinburgh and he represents a nearby borough [in Parliament], that is where he has the most influence. As the men already raised were given a promise that they could serve with him, it will be impossible for him to raise men in that area again if this is not honoured. Some of the men who volunteered would not have come forward unless they believed they could serve in HMS Northumberland. It does not appear from [Regulating] Captain James Nash's letter that he is claiming he raised the men himself, and they were only sent to his rendezvous because there was no other place to receive them. Asks if the Admiralty will allow him to keep faith with his men.
