Description

Folios 199-200: William Charleton, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Reports that James Candy, Benjamin Parker and Daniel Cutler were impressed at Sunderland from the brig Speculation as crewmen before the mast, regardless of their tickets as Sea Fencibles, and he gave his reasons for detaining them in his letter of 8 December 1803. The Admiralty approved of his decision in their letter of 12 December.

Folios 201-202: enclosed with folios 199-200. Letter from Captain Edward O'Bryen, the Sea Fencibles, Gosport, to the Admiralty dated 19 December 1803. Encloses a letter from John Bayer of Itchen Ferry seeking the discharge of James Candy, Benjamin Parker and Daniel Cutler, impressed by Captain William Charleton of Shields and about whom the Admiralty wrote to him on 12 December. Mr Bayer has been almost solely responsible for bringing forward the men and boats at Itchen Ferry.

Folios 203-204: enclosed with folios 199-200. Letter dated 18 December 1803 from John Bayer, Itchen Ferry, to Captain Edward O'Bryen, the Sea Fencibles, Gosport. Writes on behalf of three men who were impressed from his brig at Newcastle. Feels theirs is a hard case, as they are both in the coastal trade and the Sea Fencibles. Points out that he has done a lot to bring the Sea Fencibles forward, and that it will now cost him £50 to get his vessel home. Did not know there was a limit on the distance men could go in the coastal trade, and the three are all fishermen belonging to Itchen Ferry.
