Description

Folios 195-196: William Charleton, Regulating Captain, North Shields. He has been asked to report on the case of Hudson Blackburn. He was impressed at Shields on 9 November as he was one of the class of people mentioned in the Impress Warrants. He was impressed as a Waterman, physically fit to serve. Several applications were made for his release and he was arrested while aboard the tender HMS Eliza, but as the writ had been had been executed by a deputy of the Water Bailiffs, Captain Charleton was able to oppose it successfully. His friends then threatened to apply to the Court of King's Bench but he suspects their application has been denied. Refers the case to the Admiralty for judgement.

Folios 197-198: enclosed with solio 195-196. Letter from Francis Engleheart, Tower Dock, London, to the Admiralty dated 20 December 1803. Writes on behalf of Hudson Blackburn, part owner of the Sarah of Newcastle and also of a wherry on the River Tyne, who was impressed and is now aboard HMS Zealand at the Nore. The enclosed documents [no longer present] will show that Blackburn is indeed a ship owner and the affidavit shows he has never been to sea. Asks for his discharge.
