Folios 179-180: William Charleton, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Reports that Waterman James Thompson was impressed at Shields on 9 November 1803, and he thinks this is the man referred to in Mr Rowe's letter. He remembers the various applications made for Thompson's release all made the same points as those in Mr Rowe's letter, and he believes them to be true. If the Admiralty decide to allow this class of men to raise substitutes, Thompson would be a worth case. He was sent to the Nore in the tender HMS Eliza on 29 November.
Folios 181-182: enclosed with folios 179. Letter from W Rowe to the Admiralty dated 6 December 1803. Writes on behalf of George Thompson, who was recently impressed. He has never been a seaman, but was employed by Mr Rowe and others to help navigate the river craft used in the shipping of guard stones. Thompson has a wife and small children. Offers to find an Able Seamen to take his place and refers the Admiralty to Captain William Charleton about Thompson's circumstances.
