Description

Folios 139-140: William Charleton, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Reports that Joseph Johnson, a Waterman, was impressed at Newcastle on November 10, 1803, thinks he is the man mentioned in Mr Dunn's application. Thinks Johnson is in the same position as all of the other Watermen. Captain Charleton feels he has no authority to release them without orders from the Admiralty, and he considers Mr Dunn a nuisance.

Folios 141-142: enclosed with folios 139-140. Letter from George Dunn, Newcastle, to the Admiralty dated 17 November 1803. Waterman George Johnson was impressed on 12 November 1803. As a petition about the Watermen was sent to the Admiralty on 13 November, he has waited to hear the outcome of that application, and now understands the Admiralty propose to keep all of the Watermen who have been impressed. But Johnson has seven children to support. Given that Mr Dunn has helped to raise 80 volunteers for the Navy in 14 days, he hopes they will take Johnson's case into consideration and discharge him if Mr Dunn can find a substitute. His letter is counter-signed by Mayor Christopher Smith and five Justices of Newcastle.
