Description

Folios 115-116: William Charleton, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Reports that William Polard, George Dodds, James Newman and Robert Brownwater were impressed on 9 November 1803, as they fell within the classes of men described in the Impress Warrants. They were working as Keelmen and Watermen, and so were outside the terms of Lord Hawkesbury's act [of Parliament]. As far as passage boats are concerned, they are required to have a license to avoid seizure by the Revenue Officers, but otherwise are the same as a common wherry.

Folios 117-118: enclosed with folios 115-116. Letter from Robert Ramshaw, North Shields, to the Admiralty dated 12 November 1803. Asks for the discharge of four men who have recently been impressed, William Polard, George Dodds, James Newman and Robert Brownwater. Polard from South Shields is the owner and Master of a keel boat, who was in a Navy tender which sailed yesterday for the Nore. Encloses [no longer present] receipts for his transfer. Dodds is a Foreman to Messers Cookson and Dean's bottle yard near Newcastle. He is blind in one eye, and is currently aboard a tender at Shields. Newman is employed by the same firm and is also on board a tender there. Brownwater is the part owner of a passage boat betwen Shields and Newcastle, encloses the suffrance granted to this vessel. Brownwater is on the tender which has sailed for the Nore.
