Description

Folios 93-94: William Charleton, Regulating Captain, North Shields. He has been asked to report on the cases of Michael Henderson and Joseph Clinch. Henderson was impressed ashore at Shields on 20 August 1803 as he had been to sea before as a Carpenter but had no protection on him. Joseph Clinch was impressed on October 22 as he had not signed the articles of the ship Friendship.

Folios 95-96: enclosed with folios 93-94. Petition from James Hedley, blacksmith, of Percy Main Colliery, Northumberland to the Admiralty. He has known Michael Henderson since his infancy. In January, 1802, he signed on as a Carpenter aboard the Duke of Clarence. In June of 1803 he signed on as Carpenter of the Robert and Jane of Sunderland, but on 20 August he was seized by an officer of the Impress Service and sent aboard HMS Zealand. Points out that by act of Parliament, seamen should be exempt from being pressed for two years from the date they first sign on aboard a ship. Asks for Henderson to be discharged.

Folio 97: enclosed with folios 93-94. Affidavit sworn by William Bainbridge, Master of the Friendship of Newcastle. He appointed Joseph Clinch as Chief Mate of the vessel on July 29, 1803, but on October 22 Clinch was seized by members of the Impress Service. He had not yet been paid his wages, and when he was taken the ship was in imminent danger as only he and one small boy were aboard.

Folio 98: enclosed with folios 93-94. Letter from Robert Ramshaw, North Shields, to the Admiralty dated 25 October 1803. He is sending an affidavit about the seizing of Joseph Clinch, asks for this to be laid before the Admiralty and Clinch discharged.
