Description

Folios 571-572: Robert Corbet, HMS Bittern at the Nore. Confirms arrived at the Nore and encloses his Orders from David Atkins, State of Condition and Defects and his Journal for previous month. Note: last two items not with letter. States that at 4pm on 26 August the ship struck a reef of rocks off Redcar in Yorkshire. Has referred the Pilot for a Court Martial. Lists the damage and how they got the vessel off the reef.

Folios 573-574: enclosure with folios 571-572. Letter dated 29 August 1802 by John Wharton, Redcar, . At the request of some fishermen at Redcar, who assisted the Bittern when on the reef, encloses a certificate from Captain Corbet of HMS Bittern to entitle them to remuneration from the Admiralty for their assistance. Requests that the funds are transferred to him, in whatever is the most convenient way, and he will ensure fishermen are paid.

States that if the weather had not been so calm the accident could have resulted in the loss of the ship. The accident should not be blamed on any person because there is an error in the Charts. The reef of rocks, called the Salt...[?} where the Bittern grounded is in the charts as being three miles NWN from Redcar whereas it is two miles NEE. It is not often the King's ships come so close to the coast otherwise this error would have been discovered earlier. [?] Asks them to reply to Octavus Hall.

Folio 575: enclosure with folios 571-572. Note dated 1 September 1802. Requesting that Robert Wharton's letter be a public letter and act for the fishermen.

Folio 576: enclosure with folios 571-572. David Atkins, Captain HMS Iris. Orders Robert Corbet of HMS Bittern to go to the Nore. On arrival send to the Admiralty a statement of the Bittern being aground on the 26 August.
