Folios 258-259: Alexander Cochrane, HMS Ajax, Spithead. Refers to copy of attached letter from the Navy Office, dated 10 February 1802, requesting payment for rum and wine which he had ordered between 23 December 1794 and 5 January 1795. Explains that at the time HMS Thetis was laying, almost a total wreck on the coast of Virginia in December 1794. He states that it was necessary to help the ships' company who were constantly at the pumps and the numerous attempts to refloat the Thetis on an open coast at that time of year. Hopes the Admiralty will not enforce the request for payment because without all the hard work the Thetis would have been totally lost.
