Description

Folios 290-291: Thomas Briggs, HMS Leviathan, Marseilles. Asks that his expenses be paid for entertaining Lord and Lady Bentinck and their suite even though they changed the arrangements at the last minute and did not embark. He also embarked the Commissary General, John Bisset, by order of Admiral Penrose in Malta and took him to Palermo and Marseilles. Encloses the orders from Lord Exmouth.

Folio 291: enclosure with folios 290-291. Copy of a letter dated 12 May 1815 from Admiral Rt Hon Edward Pellew, Lord Exmouth, to Captain Thomas Briggs, HMS Leviathan. You are hereby directed to embark Lord William Bentinck, Commander-in-Chief of Mediterranean Forces and his suite and proceed to a rendezvous to join my Flag and such other ports as he may direct.

Folio 292: enclosure with folios 290-291. Copy of a letter dated 19 October 1815 from Rear-Admiral of the White Sir Charles Vinicombe Penrose, HMS Queen, Malta to Captain Thomas Briggs, HMS Leviathan. In pursuance of your orders from Lord Exmouth, you should call off Palermo to enable Commissary General, John Bisset to transact his business which Sir Thomas Maitland has represented to me as important.

Folios 293-294: enclosure with folios 290-291. Admiralty Note undated. I have referred to the note you allude to and the notional rank of John Bisset will be determined by the Commander-in-Chief in order to establish the level of expenses appropriate for his passage.
