Folios 412-413: William Bowles, Heron Court, Ringwood. He has been asked to justify his allegation that the Americans named in a recent letter he has received from the Admiralty were in fact responsible for attempting to blow up HMS Vivid after she was recaptured by his ship HMS Ceres. He sets out his reasons. They were the only men on board HMS Vivid at the time; they attempted to cut the rigging of HMS Vivid; their anxiety and haste to leave HMS Vivid after she was retaken, a fact noted by the boarding officer; their evasive and contradictory answers when questioned about the attempt to blow up the vessel. In conclusion he has no doubt as to their guilt.
