Description

Folios 416-420: William Bedford, HMS Royal Sovereign, Basque Roads. He is sending a letter from Joseph Ramsay, Master of HMS Royal Sovereign. Mr Ramsay's conduct and abilities fully met his approbation.

Folios 417-419: enclosure with folios 416-419 dated 20 May 1812 from Joseph Ramsay, Master, HMS Royal Sovereign. Basque Roads. He asks for his son, Robert Ramsay, who has passed as a Lieutenant, now serving as Master's Mate of HMS Ferret, to be promoted to Lieutenant on HMS Royal Mary. He himself has had a long and active service as a merchant seaman, and in the Royal Navy from 1795. He escaped from Brest Prison in 1795 and brought the Honourable Henry Willes to England with an account of the French Fleet. He was persauded to join the Navy as a Master and Pilot on account of his knowledge of the North East coast, Holland and Baltic. He was Master of HMS Repulse in 1797 at the time of the Nore Mutiny and was instrumental in seizing the ship from the mutineers. He was in action at Copenhagen and at the taking of Cressey in the East Indies and the destruction of the Dutch fleet.
