Description

Folio 251: William Bedford, HMS Royal Sovereign, Cowsand Bay. He is unable to answer queries about the Reverend A. Brew due to his short time in command of HMS Sovereign. He is 46 - 50 years of age but does not know what university he was educated at or what degree he has obtained. He cannot comment on his disposition or character as the Officers have been the whole time on the Hulk. He is not acting as School Master on board but has kept a school on shore.

Folios 252-254: enclosure with folio 251 dated 28 September 1812 from Captain William Bedford, HMS Royal Sovereign to Reverend J. Owen, Chaplain General. In reply to queries, Mr Brew was educated at the University of Dublin. He is well informed and correct in his conduct. His sermons are well judged for the congregation. He is willing and ready to do his duty but he does not understand navigation and so cannot undertake the duties of School Master other than teaching the classics. He has no objection to his continuing in the navy. The crew are supplied with bibles and testaments by the Military and Naval Bible Society.

Folio 254: enlcosure with folio 251 dated 13 February 1813, C [Cantuar?] Lambeth Palace. The testimony from clergymen in his diocese is dated 1804 and Admiral Bedford's letters are many years later. He is not satisfied with the documents.
