Folios 234-237: Mathew Barton Bradby, HMS Calypso, Grimsby Roads. Reports that prior to leaving Yarmouth Roads, he sent a boat to the Rose Merchant Ship with Lieutenant J. G. Thompson to impress some men who had been reported by the Master of that ship as acting in a mutinous manner. Samuel Howland Downes, alias, Thomas Brown, voluntarily gave himself up. He appears to be 20 years of age, is a landsman and a Cooper by trade.
Folio 235: enclosure with folios 234-237. From Anthony Lacon, 14 Drury Lane to J. Barrow dated 23 February 1809. Is enclosing indentures [not present] for Samuel Howland Downes who is apprenticed to him for 7 years. After a slight disagreement, Samuel Howland Downes entered on board the Rose Merchant Ship under the assumed name of Thomas Brown and was impressed and now on board HMS Calypso where he is now detained. Samuel Howland Downes is 17 years of age, has never been to sea or been otherwise employed than in learning to be a Cooper. There are 4 years unexpired on his apprenticeship and his release is requested.
