Description

Folio 231: Joseph Bingham, Richmond. Responds to yesterday's letter. He does not know the writer of the letter which was enclosed and gives assurance that while at the Cape of Good Hope he took pains to make sure that every individual had his private property preserved gave orders tot hat effect to the Prize Master. When Johnathon Abel, Captain of the Norge, applied on behalf of his Officers and crew, he gave permission for them to sell their clothes at the Cape as the number of prisoners on board HMS Sceptre prevented then taking on board all their baggage.They were given free access to their ship for that purpose during the majority of the 7 weeks Captain Bingham remained at the Cape. He also paid bills for the Danish Captains and Officers for their subsistence on shore at the Cape to the sum of £200-300. Returns the enclosures.

Folios 232-233: enclosure with folio 231. Letter dated 27 February 1809 by Frederik Prasch, Reading, to the Admiralty. The writer is a Prisoner of War, taken on 31 January 1808 from the Danish Asiatic Company ship Norge by HMS Sceptre, Captain Joseph Bingham, at the Cape of Good Hope. Requests return of personal property (1 Sextant and 1 Quadrant and some Danish books) which have the value of £50. He has written twice to Captain Bingham but received no reply.
