Description

Folio 375: Andrew Broun, Regulating Officer, Greenock Rendezvous. Covering letter for the enclosed letters and request for instruction on how to proceed. Many Seaman would avoid the Impress under similar circumstances of joining vessels having claimed that they were going Herring Fishing.

Folios 376-378: enclosures with folio 375. Letter dated 11 January 1808 by Clark Ralston and Co, Campbelltown, to Andrew Broun, Royal Navy, Greenock. States that Neil McCualisky, who was impressed in Greenock from the sloop Dan of Campbelltown, Mr Isaac Master. Request he be released.

Folios 378-380: enclosures with folio 375. Letter dated 8 January 1808 by [?], Colin MacLarty Provo, and ? Porter Deputy Lieutenant, Campbelltown, to [Andrew Broun, Royal Navy, Greenock]. [three and half sides] By the Act of Parliament passed in 1802 for Establishing a Militia force in Scotland, all seamen and Seafaring men, are exempted from the Militia ballots because they were from their profession subject to be impressed into His Majesty's Navy. But it was found that there was a class of people situated along the coasts of Scotland who went starts to the fishing and carried on some other traffic in boats occasionally, but who resided upon the land, for at last the half of the year, as farm servants, and other labouring occupations.
