Folio 234: Edward Brace, HMS Virginie, Falmouth. Reports putting into Port, recent gales having driven him to the Eastward of Scilly with the Head of the Main Mast badly sprung and the ship having strained so much in her upper works as to be leaky over the stowrooms and fore Magazine. Has sent for the builder to receive his opinion and will report to their Lordships. Will send her state and condition report [ not present] together with a copy of his orders.
Folios 235-236: enclosure with folio 234. Orders dated 26 December 1807 by Rear Admiral James Hawkins-Whitshed, HMS Trent, Cork Harbour, to Edward Brace, HMS Virginie. Orders to. Hasreason to believe that the Mary and Eweretta from Quebec laden with Firs were without convoy or protection. You are ordered to cruise between Scilly and Cape Clear for the protection of trade and the annoyance of the enemy and in the went of your falling in the vessels above mentioned, or any unprotected merchant ship or ships you are to afford every assistance.
