Description

Folio 79: Thomas Bowen, HMS Hindostan, the Nore. Encloses a copy of an order from Vice Admiral [Billy] Douglas with accompanying enclosure number 6 and reports thereon.

Folio 80: enclosure with folio 79. Letter dated 13 May 1807 by Vice Admiral [Billy] Douglas to Captain Bowen, HMS Hindostan. Asks for orders he has sent to him, about the discharge of men or for statements of their cases, be attended to and that reports be sent directly to the Secretary of the Admiralty and his actions also communicated to the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty.

Folio 81: enclosure with folio 79. Report by Captain Thomas Bowen. About William Birkdale, Volunteer on HMS Hindostan when lying at Hosely Bay, who previously belonged to the Wells of London.

Folio 82: enclosure with folio 79. Memorandum dated 5 May 1807 by Vice Admiral [Billy] Douglas, Yarmouth, to Captain Bowen, HMS Hindostan. Orders to report on age, qualifications and impress details of William Birkdale.

Folio 83: enclosure with folio 79. Letter dated 2 May 1807 by John Norman, St. Catherines, to the Admiralty. Encloses the indenture for William Birkdale, impressed on HMS Hindostan from the Wells brigantine and asks for his discharge.

Folio 84: enclosure with folio 79. Report by Captain Thomas Bowen. About Bryan Bullman, who was turned over from HMS Sophie, and says he was pressed in 1805. He is now rated Carpenter's Mate and is the only Shipwright in the Carpenter's crew.

Folio 85: enclosure with folio 79. Memorandum dated 23 April 1807 by Vice Admiral [Billy] Douglas, Yarmouth and Vice Admiral Thomas Alldridge to Captain Bowen, HMS Hindostan. Orders to report on age, qualifications and impress details of Bryan Bullman.

Folio 86: enclosure with folio 79. Letter dated 19 April 1807 by John Brockbank, Shipbuilder, Liverpool to the Admiralty. Petition to have Bryan Bullman discharged by virtue of exemption to Landsmen by Act of Parliament. Advises that Bryan Bullman had served as his apprentice and was then engaged as Carpenter on board the Mary Ann, Captain John Parker, for a voyage to Dominique. He was impressed from this ship when homeward bound to England and is now on board HMS Hindostan, at which time he had only been at sea 10 months. He had not been employed as a Waterman and he did not enter the service as a volunteer.

Folio 87: enclosure with folio 79. Report by Captain Thomas Bowen. About Daniel Cole who was entered by Lieutenant Sanders as a volunteer on HMS Hindostan at Hosely Bay, who previously belonged to the Lively of Yarmouth.

Folio 88: enclosure with folio 79. Memorandum dated 23 April 1807 by Vice Admiral [Billy] Douglas, Yarmouth and Vice Admiral Thomas Alldridge to Captain Bowen, HMS Hindostan. Orders to report on age, qualifications and impress details of Daniel Cole.

Folios 89-90: enclosure with folio 79. Letter dated 4 May 1807 by John Fisher, Great Yarmouth, to the Admiralty. Advises that his brigantine, the Lively, was boarded by an Officer and men from HMS Hindostan and they impressed Daniel Cole. He had been apprenticed by him on 27 November 1804 and he had never been at sea before that date. Asks for an immediate order for his discharge and a return of his indenture.

Folio 91: enclosure with folio 79. Report by Captain Thomas Bowen. About William Bushell who was entered as a Volunteer on HMS Hindostan, when lying at Hosely Bay on 11 April 1807, and who previously belonged to the Ocean of Faversham.

Folio 92: enclosure with folio 79. Memorandum dated 22 April 1807 by Vice Admiral [Billy] Douglas, Yarmouth to Captain Bowen, HMS Hindostan. Orders to report on age, qualifications and impress details of William Bushell.

Folio 93: enclosure with folio 79. Letter dated 17 April 1807 by Lewis Gibson, Agent, Tower dock, London, on behalf of James Robertson, Shipowner, Canterbury to the Admiralty. Asks for the discharge of James Robertson's servant, William Bushell, who was impressed by an Officer of HMS Hindostan, Captain Bowen, on 11 April out of the brigantine Ocean in Hosely Bay. Encloses indentures and oaths.

Folio 94: enclosure with folio 79. Sworn oath dated 16 April 1807 by Peter Davison, Master, the Ocean of Sandwich before C.E. Plater, Curate of Whitstable. Confirms that William Bushell of Bekesbourne, Kent, apprentice to James Robertson who was impressed by an Officer of HMS Hindostan, Captain Bowen, on 11 April out of the brigantine Ocean in Hosely Bay, in bound according to law by a pair of indentures.

Folio 95: enclosure with folio 79. Sworn oath dated 16 April 1807 by James Robertson, Canterbury, Kent before C.E. Plater, Curate of Whitstable. Confirms that William Bushell of Bekesbourne, Kent, was apprentice to James Robertson for sea service for three years from 12 June 1804.

Folio 96: enclosure with folio 79. Report by Captain Thomas Bowen. About Isaac Mansfield Fenwick who came on board from HMS Zealand on 3 April and says he was pressed at Shadwell Dock on 24 April.

Folio 97: enclosure with folio 79. Memorandum dated 23 April 1807 by Vice Admiral [Billy] Douglas, Yarmouth to Captain Bowen, HMS Hindostan. Orders to report on age, qualifications and impress details of Isaac Mansfield Fenwick.

Folios 98-99: enclosure with folio 79. Sworn oath dated 29 April 1807 by John Fenwick, No.6 New Street, Shadwell before William Mellish, to the Admiralty. Asked for Isaac Mansfield Fenwick, his apprentice, to be discharged but notes that the Admiralty responded that no such apprentice was on board HMS Ceres. Advises that his apprentice was drafted on board HMS Hindostan, when lying off Hosely Bay, near Harwich and again asks for his discharge.

Folio 100: enclosure with folio 79. Report by Captain Thomas Bowen. About Abraham Wooden who was impressed by Lieutenant Sanders from the Lapwing of Yarmouth when lying at Hosely Bay.

Folio 101: enclosure with folio 79. Memorandum dated 25 April 1807 by Vice Admiral [Billy] Douglas, Yarmouth and Vice Admiral Thomas Alldridge to Captain Bowen, HMS Hindostan. Orders to discharge Abraham Wooden.

Folio 102: enclosure with folio 79. Letter dated 25 April 1807 by John Shelleypent? to the Admiralty. Encloses a register and affidavit and asks for Abraham Wooden to be discharged as a boy under the age of 18.

Folio 103: enclosure with folio 79. Register extract signed by Richard Turner, Minister and Edward Weston, Churchwarden confirming the date of baptism of Abraham Wooden as 18 March 1801 born on 16 August 1791 to Jacob Wooden and Mary Wooden nee Bullman

Folio 104: enclosure with folio 79. Oath by Jacob Wooden, Carter, before William Fisher, Mayor of Great Yarmouth and Justice of the Peace dated 23 April 1807, that his son Abraham Wooden was impressed on 8 April 1807 from the Lapwing of Yarmouth, Barnard Bond, Master, when lying off Orford Harbour.
