Description

Folios 193-194: Thomas Briggs, HMS Orpheus, Madeira. He has ordered the Whiting schooner to remain in Madeira at the request of the Consul and sent her dispatches in HMS Fly, which had been ordered by [Admiral] Sir Richard Strachan to follow his squadron. He ordered the schooner to remain until August 26 because the Consul, Mr Pringle, had been arrested on a charge that two years ago he falsely imprisoned a Portuguese citizen and so rendered himself incapable of performing his duties. Captain Briggs has made enquiries and found that the Consul was trying to restore public order when he was wounded in the head by a Portuguese officer in disguise, and that the Consul acted with moderation and forbearance. Captain Briggs asked the Governor to secure Mr Pringle's release and His Excellency Alsenso Sequiro [Triere ?] assured them he would intervene with the civil power and that the Consul should be set free until he had received a report from the court. Captain Briggs has therefore ordered the Whiting to call at Lisbon on her way to England in order to deliver some letters for the Consul. HMS Orpheus and her convoy will sail tomorrow, having been delayed by the annual festival.
