Folio 187: Thomas Briggs, HMS Orpheus, off the Texel. Encloses a letter from Lieutenant David Bowden of the Royal Marines asking for his full pay, as he has been obliged to withdraw from the society of the other officers of the ship in order to save money. Asks the Admiralty in intercede on his behalf.
Folios 188-189: enclosed with folio 187. Letter dated 18 February 1806 by Lieutenant David Bowden, Royal Marines, HMS Orpheus, off the Texel, to the Admiralty. He was recently sent to Staffordshire to recruit and because several of his recruits were rejected although they had been passed by a surgeon and attested by a Magistrate, and other recruits deserted after receiving their bounty, half his pay has been stopped to clear the debt that was incurred. He has a wife and family who depend on him and he cannot support them on half pay. Asks to be allowed his full pay.
