Description

Folios 408-409: Robert Barrie, HMS Brilliant, at sea. In case reports of an action between the Combined Fleets and Lord Nelson have not reached England, he is sending copies of information he has received. He has proceeded to the fleet off Ushant with the information.

Folio 409: enclosure with folio 408. Copy of a report dated 11 November 1805 by Johannes Hagberg to Robert Barrie on board HMS Brilliant at Sea. He was spoken to by an English frigate in the Gut of Gibraltar on 1 November who reported an action between the Combined and English fleets and that the latter had captured 17 ships. The same night he fell in with 3 dismasted ships which he believes were English prizes. He believes the action took place 2 days before.

Folio 410: enclosure with folio 408. Copy of a report dated 12 November 1805 by Joseph Murphy to Robert Barrie on board HMS Brilliant at Sea. He sailed from Oporto as a passenger in the Providentia on 8 November 1805. Spanish reports 2 days before he sailed said that Lord Nelson's fleet had engaged the combined French and Spanish feets and 21 of the latter were missing, of which 18 were taken by the English and 15 had been seen in tow of the English fleet. Two Spanish sips had escaped into Cadiz. Lord Nelson had been mortally wounded and only lived to sgn his dispatches and the French admiral had been taken.

Folio 411: enclosure with folio 408. Copy of a report dated 12 November 1805 by Joon Eichen Stongard to Robert Barrie on board HMS Brilliant at Sea. He is Master of the Providentia galliot and sailed from Oporto on 8 November 1805. Four days before he sailed it was generally reported that an action had taken place between the Combined fleets and the English and that the Combined fleets were defeated and had 20 ships missing and 18 had been taken by the English. That Lord Nelson was wounded and has since died.
