Description

Folio 395: Robert Barrie. Cover only.

Folio 396: enclosure with folio 395. Letter dated 7 February 1805 from Robert Barrie, HMS Brilliant, Lough Craignish [Loch Craignish], to William Marsden. Is sending a copy of his letter to Lord Gardner and is anxious to receive instructions concerning the Aurora which is now on shore at Lough Don. He could take her cargo to Liverpool or another port which should happen as soon as possible to secure it fro the wet.

Folios 397-399: enclosure with folio 395. Copy of a letter dated 7 February 1805 from Robert Barrie, HMS Brilliant, Lough Craignish [Loch Craignish],to Lord Gardner, Commander in Chief, Cork. He directed Lieutenant Whilly to join him at Crinan but despite fair weather since the 26 [January 1805] he did not. On 6 [February 1805] he left HMS Brilliant to go in search of her and found her ashore at Lough Don. He does not know the details of her loss. He has asked Lieutenant Whilly and the 2 Master's Mates to give him details. The ship was lying in a dangerous situation and Mr McCurdy who is in charge agrees that her cargo should be landed. He asked Mr Campbell, a gentleman living near there, to send to Oban for some volunteers to guard the property. He has also sent to Lieutenant Ramsay of the Marines to assist. The ship is ly7ing on the rocks and is unlikely to float. He is sending a copy of Lieutenant Whilly's order. Mr Figg, Master's Mate is with him together with Mr Donnellan, Master's Mate, Mr Henderson, Mate of the Ainsley cutter, 12 men and a boy from HMS Brilliant, 4 seamen from the Ainsley cutter, the Spaniard and Mr McCurdy. He has sent Mr Payneth, Purser, to Greenock to get a supply of provisions. Asks for a reply to be sent to John MacDougall of Lunga, Justice of the Peace, Dail, Craignish.

Folio 399: enclosure with folio 395. Copy of an order dated 25 December 1804 from Robert Barrie, HMS Brilliant, to William Figg, Master's Mate late of HMS Brilliant. He has orders to detain any Spanish ships or vessels and send them in to port. He is to give strict orders to any Officers in charge of detained Spanish ships to prevent embezzlement. He is ordered to use his utmost endeavours to prevent embezzlement.

Folios 400-401: enclosure with folio 395. Copy of an order dated 13 December 1804 from Robert Barrie, HMS Brilliant, to William Figg, Master's Mate of HMS Brilliant. He is ordered to go on board the Spanish ship the Aurora of Malaga. The Spanish crew are not to be treated as prisoners. The ship must keep company with HMS Brilliant and if they part company make way to Lough Swilly and there acquaint Admiral Lord Gardner of his arrival. He is to find out details of the capture of the Aurora by the Neptune of Greenock. Her cargo must not be moved. Mr Anderson, Mate of the Annesley cutter is familiar with the Scottish and Irish coasts and should be consulted if he parts company with HMS Brilliant. Mr McCurdy, Mate of the Neptune of Greenock, is to be considered a prisoner in his charge.

Folios 401-402: enclosure with folio 395. Copy of an order dated 16 January 1805 from Robert Barrie, HMS Brilliant, Lough Swilly, to Lieutenant John Whilly, HMS Brilliant. He is to go on board the Spanish ship the Aurora and take the orders now in possession of Mr Figg. He is to keep company with HMS Brilliant and go to Liverpool with the Aurora and see the ship secured. He must go to see William Statham at 2 Clayton Square for his help in finding the Government Officers appointed to detain Spanish property under the embargo and deliver the ship to them. Mr McCurdy or whoever is the agent in Liverpool of Messrs Richie and Sons should give evidence with the Officers sent from HMS Brilliant. Lieutenant Whilly and Petty Officers and seamen belonging to HMS Brilliant and Mr Anderson and the men belonging to the cutter should go on board HMS Princess and request Captain Colquitt to take you to your proper ships. If the Government Officers refuse to take charge of the Aurora he is to let the Admiralty know and also Lord Gardner at Cork.
