Folio 390: Robert Barrie, HMS Brilliant, Lock Cragnish [Loch Craignish]. Is sending a copy of a letter sent to Lord Gardner.
Folios 391-392: enclosure with folio 390. Copy of letter from Robert Barrie, HMS Brilliant, Lock Cragnish [Loch Craignish], to Allan Lord Gardner, Admiral of the Blue, Commander in Chief, Cork. His letter sent from off Loughswilly on 19 [January 1805] stated that he had left with the Spanish ship Aurora under his convoy for Liverpool. Describes the journey from Mallen Head and being forced up to the harbour of Crinan. Describes the events leading up to striking a sunken rock. The Aurora let go her anchor and they soon lost sight of her. On 22 [January 1805] he sent HMS Brilliant's cutter in search of her and found she had arrived safely at Lough Aling having lost all her anchors. He has supplied her as best he can and directed Lieutenant Whilly who is in charge of her to join him as soon as possible. Reports 2 other ships driven in by the weather. One was an American ship called the Columbia or Columbus direct from Charlestown which he has ordered to hoist a quarantine flag. Unfortunately before his arrival she had frequently communicated with the shore and sailed for Glasgow the day before yesterday. The other ship now lying at Crinan is a Liverpool Guineasman flying the yellow flag. He hears that 19 of her crew have died within the last few days but she has also communicated with the shore. He has found a JP, Mr McDougal of Lunga, and advised him to take every precaution. He also wrote to the Duke of Argyle, Lord Lieutenant of the County.
