Description

Folios 381-382: John Ayscough, HMS Success, the Downs. Has arrived from Malta. Is sending letters from Commodore Penrose and Captain Eyre.

Folio 382: enclosed in folios 381-382. John Ayscough and Thomas Boney, Carpenter. List of defects on HMS Success.

Folios 383-384: Orders dated 2 May 1811 by George Eyre, HMS Magnificent, Senior Officer Malta to Captain John Ayscough, HMS Success. Orders to take a convoy to Gibraltar and England with instructions as to what to do in the event of poor weather or separated ships.

Folio 385: enclosed in folios 381-382. Felix Delaney, Surgeon, HMS Success. Return for the sick and wounded on board HMS Success for 30 June to 19 July 1811 filled in for all the diseases on board HMS Success. The three men who died of pulmonary consumption were put aboard at Malta in a very weak state.

Folios 386-394: enclosed in folios 381-382. Printed sheet of signals and instructions for ships under convoy with HMS Success. It includes signals for fog, bad weather and separation with coloured in flags and diagrams of lights to be shown and penalties for disobeying the Commander of the convoy. The six pages of flag signals are all coloured in by hand and there are spaces for the convoy Commander to add his own for example with different flags for different rendez-vous.
