Description

Folio 355-356: James Anderson, HMS Rinaldo, off Dover. Gave chase to a smugglers' boat from Folkestone and drove it ashore. HMS Rinaldo's boat was put ashore too so that the crew could be pressed. The smugglers' crew escaped over the cliff but on returning to capture the smugglers' boat he found the Excise men, under J.W. Croker, had taken it under their control. The Excise men said they were drawn to the coast by the cannon fire and Captain Kennedy [Thomas Kennedy] of HMS Cordelia who was there as well will testify too so he appeals to the Admiralty and the Treasury to let justice be done and given him the money for the boat as the Custom's men have no right to it.

Folio 357: enclosed in folios 355-356. Letter dated 9 July 1810 by Thomas Kennedy, HMS Cordelia and James Anderson, HMS Rinaldo. Description of the joint action against the smugglers involving John Leader, Master of HMS Cordelia and John Hope, Master's Mate of HMS Rinaldo. The Excise boat, the Lively, rushed in and took the smugglers' boat and its cargo to Dover but he thinks that HMS Rinaldo and HMS Cordelia should be compensated.

Folio 358: enclosed in folios 355-356. Deposition sworn 9 July 1810 before the Mayor of Dover from John Leader, Master, HMS Cordelia and John Hope, Master's Mate, HMS Rinaldo giving evidence of the incident with the smuggler's boat.
