Description

Folios 242-243: James Alms, HMS Repulse in Torbay. He writes to record an order he has received from Admiral Sir Alan Gardner to take under his command HMS Gibraltar and HMS Agamemnon and to report on their State and Condition. He encloses a copy of the order.

He also reports that the fire ship Megara damaged the fixings of her capstan so she was unable to sail with the Fleet. Captain Alms was able to supply the materials needed to make repairs which made her fit to go to sea but bad weather has kept her in port. When the weather abates Captain West will sail and join the Admiral off Ushant as ordered.

HMS Gilbraltar has has a mishap, she grounded and damaged her rudder. Captain Kelly has reported he is making repairs along the lines of the plan of the late Captain Pakenham.

Folios 243-244: Enclosure to folios 242-243. Copy order dated 6 February 1800 from Sir Alan Gardner, Admiral of the Blue, HMS Royal Sovereign in Torbay, to Captain James Alms of HMS Repulse. He is directed to take under his command HMS Gibraltar and HMS Agamemnon. He is to ready the ships to sail at short notice. He is to send a weekly report of the State and Condition of these ships and any others that may arrive in Torbay, to the Admiralty together with any other information that they might find useful.
