Folio 235: John Ayscough, Gier Prize Brig, Sheerness. He encloses a copy of his letter to Captain John Lawford of HMS Romney which gives details of the events that occurred concerning HMS Blanche.
Folio 236 enclosure to folio 235. Captain John Ayscough on Gier Prize Brig Sheerness dated 24 October 1799. He announces his arrival with most of his crew and all of his officers save for Mr Nowell who had been a Lieutenant aboard HMS Blanche. He left the ship in Yarmouth and has not been seen since. The remainder of the crew are serving with the army.
He reports that although he had a Dutch pilot on board and wanted to keep him, the pilot was ordered to join Captain Lawford of HMS Romney. Captain Ayscough went to see the Vice Admiral Mitchell on HMS Barbet, which is commanded by Captain Mainwaring, saying he wanted to keep the pilot but he was told that the pilot had been ordered up to the Zuyder Zee. (Sometimes spelled Zuider Zee or Zijder Zee).
He adds that the greater part of his crew are supernumaries from HMS Royal William and HMS Harlem.
