Folio 169: William Robert Broughton, HMS Penelope, Yarmouth Roads. Concerning the apprentices Robert Barber and James Squirrel. Staes that James Squirrel has been more that 3 years at sea and was 18 last January. That Robert Barber is nearly 19 and has been 7 years at sea. He has not discharged them and awaits further instructions. Archibald Rogers is already discharged and the Lieutenant being absent who pressed John Johnson, he has no documents to prove his being a mate.
Folios 170-172: enclosures with folio 169. Undayed letter by J Saunders. States:- An Admiralty Protection for Men and Boys belonging to the Thomas & William Fishing Smack, John Burton, Master, was waiting here return to Harewich with a cargo of lobsters from Norway but before she arrived a Lieutenant on board HMS Hunter, Revenue Cutter impressed John Johnson Mate and Robert Barber apprentice. The same Lieutenant impressed from the Betsy fishing smack, John Squirrel Apprentice, in spite of your protections and his indentures also Archibald Rogers from the Betsy's in spite of your protection. All four are on the HMS Penelope.
