Description

Folio 145: William Robert Broughton, HMS Penelope, Yarmouth Roads. Covering letter about the statement of the Captain of HMS Leda respecting William Gilley apprenticeand return you the enclosures. Has received their directions for the completion of war complement and wishes to be acquainted whether about HMS Penelope and HMS Leda completing their own establishment from the volunteers or pressed men at this port, or whether they are to be sent the supernumeraries as before to the Nore and if the Admiralty Midshipman are to be discharged. HMS Caroline passed at the back of the Sands on the 29 March 1803 and HMS Fortunee passed through the Roads this morning.

Folios 146-148: enclosures with folio 145. Petition dated 31 Match 1803 from Richard Benson, Master of then ship Caro of Sunderland, to William Robert Broughton. Around the 14 March 1803 the ship was boarded in Yarmouth by persons from HMS Leda who impressed William Gilley, apprentice to Sarah Benson the owner of the ship. Request he be discharged.

Folio 148: enclosure with folio 145. Letter dated 31 March 1803 by Robert Honeyman, HMS Leda, Yarmouth Roads, to William Robert Broughton, Senior Officer at Yarmouth. Reply to letter of todays date. In the case of William Gilley impressed from the Cato of Sunderland. He was impressed on the 14 March 1803, the Master of the Cato did not produce any indentures for him and that on coming on board HMS Leda he entered as a volunteer.
