Folios 406-407: Philip Beaver, Maldon. States that communication by signal between Maldon and the port at St Peter's Chapel, Bradwell, a distance of 15 miles, is only practicable for about two hours on every tide due to the shoals and flats above Osey (Osea) Island. There is a flag staff on the tower of Middle Church, now converted into a school, which can clearly be seen at St Peter's Chapel. Suggests this should be used and in anticipation of Admiralty permission being granted to do so has spoken with the vicar who confirmed that there would be no objection to this.
