Folio 279: William Bowen, HMS Caroline at Woolwich. Acknowledges receipt of Admiralty letter of 20 March, advising that William Dawson, late midshipman of the Fisgard, has been appointed lieutenant on the Caroline, in place of John Hampson who has been sent to sick quarters. However, he points out that one John Maxfield appeared on the ship on 19 March, with his commission dated 13 March, and has taken up his post as 3rd lieutenant.
