Description

Folios 474-478: William Butterfield, HMS Hazard, Spithead. Reports his arrival with the convoy under his protection. Asks if the ship may be taken into dock for repairs as the ship was damaged striking on the [illegible] in June last and her way is now so impeded that she has difficulty keeping pace with the convoy. Encloses orders received from Admiral Lord Alan Gardner.

Folios 475-476: enclosure with folios 474-478. Orders, dated 22 August 1801, from Admiral Lord Alan Gardner, HMS Dryad, Cork Harbour to William Butterfield, HMS Hazard. Orders to make the signal for a convoy eastwards and take under his charge the Army Transport Ravensworth bound for Portsmouth and Navy Victualling Transport Commerce vessels bound for ports in the English Channel, putting to sea on 25 August 1801. If no other orders are received on arrival at Spithead to cruise for 14 days between the Isles of Scilly and Cape Clear for the protection of Trade into and out of St George's Channel and the annoyance of the enemy.

Folios 476-477: enclosure with folios 474-478. Orders, dated 22 August 1801, from Admiral Lord Alan Gardner, HMS Dryad, Cork Harbour to William Butterfield, HMS Hazard. orders to receive from HMS Engageante the 9 men named overleaf who are discharged into HMS Royal William for harbour duty: John Barrett, John Kinnock, Richard Carneford, William Brown, Thomas Townley, Henry Gordon, Thomas Bowman, William Johnson and William Thompson. To also receive 7 men named in margin who were invalided and surveyed on 19 August 1801: Thomas Eldridge, John Bass, James Morrice, Joseph Halbert, James Lampert, William [Barevan] and John [Sise] who are to be sent immediately to Haslar Hospital on arrival; and Charles Johnston who is going to pass his examination for Surgeon's Mate.

Folio 477: enclosure with folios 474-478. Letter, dated 25 August 1801, from Admiral Lord Alan Gardner, Cove House to William Butterfield, HMS Hazard. Orders to apply to Commissioner Saxton, on arrival at Spithead, for the Topsail yards and Topmast booms left behind at Portsmouth Dockyard by the Dutch Ship of War, the Gelderland, and bring them back to Cork.
