Description

Folios 440-440A: William Butterfield, HMS Hazard, Spithead. Reports his arrival with the East Indiaman Triton under convoy. Explains that he has had to put in at Spithead due to the weather which prevented him from going to Shannon or any other port in Ireland to receive orders from Admiral Lord Alan Gardner. Advises that when he fell in with the Triton on 7 February 1801, position given, she was very much distressed having very few Europeans on board to navigate her so he lent her some seamen to get her into port.

Folio 440A: enclosure with folios 440-440A. Copy of letter, dated 7 February 1801, from David Dunlop, the Triton at sea to William Butterfield, HMS Hazard. Requests his protection to Portsmouth or any other port where he will be able to procure a convoy to the Downes, as he has valuable cargo on board and there being so many privateers about, it is too dangerous to proceed alone.

Folios 441-442: enclosure with folios 440-440A. Copy of Orders, dated 28 January 1801, from Admiral Lord Alan Gardner, HMS Cerberus, Cork Harbour to William Butterfield, HMS Hazard. Orders to cruise off Cape Clear and the entrance to the English Channel for the protection of Trade and the detection of enemy privateers and to report on any information of the enemy's fleet sailing from Brest
