Folios 405-406: George Burdett, HMS Sophie, Spithead. Reports he anchored at Spithead yesterday evening having sailed from St John's, Newfoundland on 20 July 1801 with a convoy of 12 oil ships and saw those bound for Ireland under Cape Clear and the remainder to their respective ports in the Channel, Dartmouth and Poole. Encloses his weekly accounts together with the Defects journal, advising that the ship has sprung a leak since encountering uncommon heavy seas on the Banks of Newfoundland which damaged the bow and despite stripping 30 feet of copper he could not get at the source. States that the copper which is now on her bottom was old French copper and is so much blown that the ship is entirely out of her proper sailing. Vice Admiral Sir Charles Morice Pole also mentioned.
Folios 406-407: enclosure with folios 405-406. Defects report of HMS Sophie, dated 1 September 1801, compiled by George Burdett, Captain, and George Turner, Carpenter.
